Baseball opens LSC season with Angelo State

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team will begin Lone Star Conference play by hosting Angelo State in a four game series on Friday and Saturday.

The series between the Rams and Aggies will begin at noon on Friday, Feb. 28 with a seven inning game followed then by a nine inning contest. Both teams will come back on Saturday at noon to conclude the series with a second seven and nine inning doubleheader.

Originally, the series stretched into Sunday but questionable weather compressed it to a two day doubleheader.

The Aggies are 5-5 this season after splitting their four game series with Northwest Missouri State Feb. 14-15. The Aggies got 5-0 and 9-6 wins in both the first games of the pair of double headers but fell 8-4 and 5-4 in the second games.

On offense, Cameron is hitting .265 with a .323 slugging percentage, and a .348 on base percentage. Leading the Ags has been Brad Blumer, who is hitting .457 with six runs scored and four RBI. The leading run producers have been Tobin Mateychick and Jordan Climpson, who both have seven RBI this season.

Pitching has been the Aggies forte so far, holding opponents to a .258 batting average, and combining for a team ERA of 3.55.

Angelo State enters the series with a 10-3 record, coming off a 3-2 loss to #6 St. Mary's on Tuesday. The Rams have a .336 team batting average, a .457 slugging percentage, and a .409 on base percentage. They currently have four players hitting over .400 for the year, with Brett David leading the back with a .476 average. Tyler Coughenour is hitting .439 with a team leading two long balls, while David Groggin is batting .400 and leads the team with 13 RBI.

On the mound ASU has a team ERA of 2.83 while holding opposing hitters to a .230 average. Jake Feckley is their ace, with a 4-0 record in 27 innings pitched. Feckley has yet to give up an earned run, has 24 strikeouts to only three walks, and is holding batters to a .161 average against him.

Following the series with Angelo State, the Aggies will hit the diamond again when they travel on Mar. 7-9 to Kingsville, Texas for a four game series.
