Aggie baseball splits LSC opener with Angelo State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAWTON, Okla. – In their first taste of Lone Star Conference play this season, the Cameron University baseball team split a double header with Angelo State Friday afternoon at McCord Field.

The Aggies overcame six team errors in game one of the double header to get a 6-5 extra inning walk-off victory, thanks to a single to short center by Jordan Climpson.

After falling behind 4-0, the Aggies struck for four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the ballgame, and a scoreless seventh forced extra innings. A scoreless eighth was followed by a one run top of the ninth from Angelo State to go ahead 5-4.

Tobin Mateychick led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After two walks to load the bases, Dalton Hilliard came in to pinch hit for CU and singled to right, scoring Mateychick. Climpson then drove in pinch runner Dillon Leveille to win the game 6-5.

Although he was awarded a no decision, Brian Shwabe pitched a gem of a game, going eight and a third innings, only giving up one earned run on six hits and striking out six. Justin Walker (1-0) was tabbed with the win as he came in to get the last out in the top of the ninth.

Game two was a 1-1 game up until the sixth inning, when ASU took a 2-1 lead. They then scored a run in both the eighth and ninth inning to extend the lead to 4-1.

With three outs to make up a three run difference, the Aggies mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth as Climpson forced a one out walk and then advanced to third on a two out Kas Sanders double. Matt Nillmeyer then pinch hit and grounded a ball to short, that resulted in a Ram error that scored both Climpson and Sanders, making it 4-3 in favor of Angelo State. Unfortunately that was all the Aggies could get as ASU got the last out and forced the spilt of the doubleheader.

Drew Reidt got his first loss of the season, despite going eight innings, striking out seven, and giving up only two earned runs.

On offense, Climpson was 4-8 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Garrett Schaede went 3-8 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Aggies move to 6-6 on the season, while Angelo State is now 11-4; both teams are 1-1 in conference play.

The two teams will continue the four game series with a double header Saturday, with game one starting at noon.
