Box Score 2 STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The Cameron University baseball team faced Tarleton State Friday afternoon in a double header and came away with a pair of wins, 1-0 and 5-4.
Game one was a pitcher's dual throughout, as
Brian Schwabe, now 3-3 on the year, pitched six shutout innings, giving up five hits and striking out two. After hitting a batter to start off the seventh inning, Schwabe gave way to
Tobin Mateychick, who earned his fourth save of the season, getting the final three outs of the seven inning game.
Cameron's offense was held to only two hits, but one of those was a Mateychick homer in the top of the fifth to score the only run of game one.
Tarleton State started the scoring in game two by pushing across a run on an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning.
The Aggies answered with a run of their own in the top of the third when
Harold Cannon drove in
Brandon Raidy. They then added to that lead with another run in the fourth via a sacrifice fly hit by
Garrett Schaede that scored
Jordan Climpson, giving CU the 2-1 lead.
Cameron was able to extend the lead with single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings. Both runs came off RBI singles by Schaede and Cannon that scored Mateychick and McElroy, giving them a 4-1 lead.
That lead would get cut down to just one, as Tarleton State scored two more in the bottom of the eighth.
Matt Nilmeyer drove in
Kas Sanders in the CU half of the ninth to put the Aggies up 5-3 going into the bottom of the ninth, and Despite giving up a run on an RBI single, Mateychick once again closed out the Texans for his second save of the day.
Steve Matta earned the win for the black and gold, moving to 3-4 on the season, after going five and two thirds innings and giving up only one run on four TSU hits.
Going 3-5 with two RBI, Cannon led the way in game two, with Schaede adding a pair of RBI as well.
The sweep of the Texans puts the Aggies' record at 14-23 overall and 9-17 in Lone Star Conference play, while Tarleton State falls to 21-19 and 11-15 in league play.
The two teams will continue the series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. for another double header.
