Women's Basketball Preview: Texas A&M-Commerce

LAWTON -- The Cameron University women's basketball team will head to the Lone Star Conference Tournament as a three seed, their highest seeding since 2002. The Aggies, who finished with a 15-10 overall record and a 12-4 LSC mark, will take on the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions in the first round on Thursday at noon in Allen, Texas.

Cameron at the conference tournament:
Cameron women have the highest seeding in the LSC Tournament since 2002 where the Aggies were the top seed in the then LSC North. In the tournament, the Aggies have been the number-4 seed three times (once in the LSC-North), the number-6 seed in 1993, number-7 in 1991, and the eight seed twice (1990 and 2014). The Aggies are 1-9 and have lost their last four in a row since beating Texas A&M-Kingsville 60-51 in 2002. Cameron has faced their opening round opponent, Texas A&M-Commerce, once in the postseason and fell 80-78 in overtime, the Aggies would have three players foul out and finished the game with only four players on the court. Of the current LSC members, Cameron has never faced Eastern New Mexico, Tarleton State, and Texas Woman's in the postseason.

LSC Honors: The Aggie women received four different honors at the end of the year Lone Star Conference Award's Banquet. Head coach Tom Webb was awarded LSC Coach of the Year, while Brandi Leal was named LSC Newcomer of the Year and received a second team All-LSC selection. Additionally, Jazzmine Robinson was named to the LSC First Team, and Jade Herl was honored on the LSC's All-Academic Team.

About Texas A&M-Commerce: The Lions enter the LSC Tournament as a six seed with a 13-13 overall record and a 7-9 league mark. The are on a four game losing streak, with their most recent loss coming against Tarleton State, as they lost 97-53 on the road. As a team, TAMUC averages 68.6 points per game and allows opponents to score just over 71 points against them. They are shooting 40 percent from the field, while hitting on 29.6 percent of their three point shots and 65 percent of their free throws. The Lions lead the LSC with 41.1 rebounds per contest, and average 13.2 assists and 18.3 turnovers per game. On the defensive side of the court, Texas A&M-Commerce averages 2.88 blcoked shots and 7.54 steals per outing.

Individually, Gabby Scott is the lone Lion in averaging double figures with 10.1 points per contest. Both La'Tisha Hearne and Abigail Leaupepe-Tele are in the top-10 in the LSC in rebounds with 7.1 and 6.7 per game respectively, while Leaupepe-Tele is fourth in the league with one block per game. Additionally, Princess Davis leads the conference with 4.3 assists per game, with Ashlee Johnson close behind with 3.8. Johnson also leads the team and is sixth in the LSC with 1.7 steals per contest.

Against the Lions: The overall series between Cameron and Texas A&M-Commerce is tied at 21 games apiece, after the Aggies won both of their meetings with the Lions this season. In their first meeting in Commerce, the Aggies hung on to win 65-64, with Charron Montgomery tallying a career high 18 points, while going a perfect 7-7 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. When the Lions visited the Aggie Gym, Cameron overcame a one point halftime deficit to win 75-69, thanks to 22 points and nine rebounds from Jazzmine Robinson, and a combined eight three pointers from Brandi Leal and Jade Herl. Cameron has faced Texas A&M-Commerce once in the LSC Tournament back in 1993, and lost 80-78.

Three Point Barrage: Cameron has proven they are one of the best three point shooting teams in the nation, hitting 7.7 three point shots per game at a .383 clip. They are first in the LSC and 18th in the nation in made threes, and second in the league and seventh in Division II in three point percentage. Leading the way is Brandi Leal, who owns the CU record for three pointers in a season, and is first in the nation with 3.68 per game, and is hitting 38 percent of her shots behind the arc. Jade Herl has also been deadly from three, hitting 2.68 long range shots per contest, and converting them at a .424 clip, which is second in the LSC and 22nd best in the nation.

Do It All Robinson: Senior guard, Jazzmine Robinson leads the Aggies and is in the top-5 in the LSC in almost every statistical category. She leads the conference and is 46th in the nation with 18.1 points per game, while shooting at third best .452 clip. She is fourth in the league with 7.9 rebounds, fifth in assists with 3.4, and fourth in steals with 1.9 per contest. This season, Robinson leads CU with seven double-doubles, 12 games with over 20 points, and 22 games with scoring in double figures. She has scored 10 or more points in Cameron's last 13 games. In her two seasons at CU, she has averaged 14.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. At 786 total points, she needs just 14 more to reach 800 for her Aggie career.

Coming Up: Should Cameron win the opening round of the tournament they will play on Friday, March 6 at noon against either Midwestern State or Eastern New Mexico.
