BETHANY – The Cameron baseball team remains undefeated at 5-0 after completing a doubleheader sweep of Southern Nazarene on Friday. The Aggies took the opener 7-1 in seven innings and 13-4 for game two in nine innings.
Â
In game one, Cameron got on the board first with two runs as
Nate Hale reached first on an error and advanced to second with
Cody Knight scoring on the play.
Jorden Fields singled to left field batting in Hale for the 2-0 Aggie advantage.
Â
Bryan Belote (2-0) held SNU to no hits until the bottom of the fifth when the Crimson Storm hit a two out single to center field advancing a runner to home off an error for their first run of the game, 2-1. The Crimson Storm had an opportunity to tie with a runner on second, but Belote struck out his fifth batter to retire the side.
Â
The Aggies obtained a run in the sixth, and Cameron's bats would explode in the top of the seventh for four runs including a Bronson Pulgado's home run and a two out two RBI double from
Jonathan Reyes to extend out CU's lead, 7-1.
Â
SNU would get a single in the bottom of the seventh, but
Andrew Garza struck out the next three batters to nail down the Aggies' 7-1 win.
Â
CU's starter
Bryan Belote picked up the win, and SNU only had two hits to the Aggie's 12 and CU's pitching staff struck out eight batters.
Â
Cody Bower went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and two stolen bases. Reyes, Pulgados, and Fields each recorded two hits.
Â
Errors plagued the Crimson Storm to begin game two as SNU committed three straight in the first inning with CU crossing the plate on an error to go up 1-0 early. Cameron would pick up two more runs in the top of the second with Hale scoring on a sacrifice fly, and the Aggies scored on another SNU error for the 3-0 advantage.
Â
However, the Crimson Storm showed their first sign of life in the bottom of the third when SNU hit a line drive single into the mound, effectively scoring a runner from third. SNU would then score after their runner advanced to home on back-to-back wild pitches bringing them within one at 3-2.
Â
Cameron would stifle the Crimson Storm's comeback hopes as the Aggies scored seven runs in the top of the fourth inning bringing it 10-2. Cameron had five hits and
Brandon Wright came up big with a two RBI double.
Â
SNU kept their fight to put up a two run fourth inning, and had an opportunity with two out bases loaded seventh inning, but it would not be enough to overtake the Aggies as Tyler McKenzie furthered Cameron's advantage 13-4 with a 3 RBI homer in the ninth inning.
Â
CU's pitching staff was split between six Aggies who accounted for 11 strikeouts and held the Crimson Storm to six hits with Matt Glassman (2-0) being credited with the win.
Cameron returns home tomorrow to face Southern Nazarene (0-6) for a doubleheader at McCord Field
