The Cardinals were predicted to finish fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division's preseason poll. The team is coming off a 38-19 campaign and the program's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 2015. Jewell went 1-2 in the tournament, falling to Truman State in the opener, then bouncing back to grab a win over the Quincy team that eliminated them from the GLVC tournament the previous week, before Ashland knocked the Cards out with a 5-3 victory. The Cardinals welcome back several players from the 38-19 team, including an 11 member senior class.
