LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team will face a tough test to start off their week as they host No. 16 Central Oklahoma for a Monday afternoon doubleheader. The two game battle was originally scheduled for April 11, but was moved up to March 27 last week.
The 23-9 Aggies have won just two out of their last six ball games, after losing a three game series against Midwestern State, two games to one. The two loses against the Mustangs have CU sitting at 11-4 in Lone Star Conference play, which is good for second in the conference standings.
Statistically, Cameron is batting .290 with 163 runs scored and 85 extra base hits, including 27 homeruns and a conference leading 12 triples. They are also fourth in the LSC with 54 stolen bases and have a team fielding percentage of .960. In the circle, the Black and Gold has a 2.96 team ERA in 198.1 innings pitched with 100 combined strikeouts and an opposing batting average of .297.
Individually, four Aggies are batting over .300, with
Breezy McComas leading the way with a .364 average. McComas also leads the team with 25 runs scored and is tied with
Brenna Busby for a team leading 32 hits. B. Busby has a team high 26 RBI, while her sister
Callie Busby has 25 RBI and
Paige Daino has 24. Daino and B. Busby lead the Ags with seven homers a piece on the season; both are tied for fifth in the conference.
Bethany Hines currently is tied for a nation best 17 wins in the circle, sporting an ERA of 2.82 in a conference leading 131.2 innings pitched. She is second in the LSC with 89 strikeouts and third in saves with three.
Central Oklahoma is now 21-7 after splitting a doubleheader with Northwest Missouri on Saturday and getting swept by Missouri Western State on Sunday. They are batting .332 as a team with 170 runs and 29 scored and 29 homers. On the mound, UCO has a team ERA of 2.25 with 150 combined strikeouts.
Carrie Abrams is hitting .519 to lead the Bronchos, while JoBi Heath has a team leading 29 RBI and Morgan Hear leads the team with nine homers. Five UCO batters are batting over .300, while four of those players have over 20 RBI, including Heard and Heath.
Peyton Walker leads the Bronchos with an 11-3 record in the circle. She has an ERA of 1.74 in 84.1 innings pitched, with seven complete game shutouts on her resume. Jayden Chestnut is 7-3 on the season, with a team best 87 strikeouts in 70.2 innings pitched. She has an ERA of 2.38.
The Aggies will be back to conference play this weekend as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a three game series, with a doubleheader on Friday, March 31 and a single game on Saturday, April 1.
