LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University softball team makes their last road trip of the regular season as they visit Western New Mexico on Friday and Saturday, April 21-22 for a three game Lone Star Conference series.
The Aggies, who were just recently ranked fifth in the South Central Region are 29-15 overall this season and 17-6 in league play. They are coming off of a 2-1 series loss to No. 6 West Texas A&M in which they battled back to win on a walk-off in game one and then got blown out in game two and three.
Sitting in third in the LSC standings, CU is batting .291 on the season with 233 runs scored and 112 extra base hits, including 41 homers, which is third best in the conference. In the circle, they have a team ERA of 3.73 with 130 total strikeouts and an opposing batting average of .313. The Ags are fourth in the league with a team fielding percentage of .962 and have swiped 72 bases.
Individually,
Breezy McComas leads CU with a .347 average and a team best 34 runs scored. She most recently broke the CU career homer record with her 44 and 45 homers against WT. In that same game, McComas tied the LSC record and broke the CU record for RBI in a game with nine. She now has 10 homeruns and 32 RBI on the season.
Paige Daino leads CU with 11 homers this season and 36 RBI. She is ranked in the top-10 in homers and is second in the league with 31 walks. Daino is also batting .331 with 33 runs scored. She is tied for second on the CU all-time homers list with 43.
Also batting over .300 for CU is freshman
Brenna Busby. B. Busby is hitting .341 and has eight homers, 32 RBI, and 30 runs scored on the season. Her sister,
Callie Busby is batting .294 for the Aggies, while driving in 29 runs and scoring 22. C. Busby also boasts a .994 fielding percentage, with just one error and three passed balls as Cameron's backstop this season.
Cameron's top pitcher is
Bethany Hines, who as a freshman is just two wins away from tying the CU program record for wins in a season. She has a 21-6 record with a 3.36 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 175 innings pitched. She ranks in the top-10 in the nation in wins and is top-10 in the conference in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, and saves.
The Aggies will face Western New Mexico, who is just 1-41 overall this season and 0-24 in LSC play. As a team, the Mustangs are batting .259 with 102 runs scored and just six homers. They have a team ERA of 8.58 and an opposing batting average of .382.
WNMU has three players batting over .300 with Mariangela Garcia leading the way with a .350 average. Lacy Granger is batting .303 with a team best 21 RBI, while Linzy Granger is batting .302 with a team leading 25 runs scored while going 7-7 on the base paths.
The series is scheduled to start on Friday, April 21 with a single game starting at 3 p.m. (central time) and will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 1 p.m. (CT). Â Â
Following the series with WNMU, Cameron will return home for their final regular season battle as they host No. 1 Angelo State for three games, April 28-29.
