Banks strikes out nine Falcons as CU clinches the series win

ODESSA, Texas – After winning two out of the first three games of the series, the Cameron baseball team defeated UT Permian Basin on Sunday, 7-2 to get the 3-1 series win.

The Aggies are now 23-14 overall this season and 4-6 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Falcons fall to 8-24 overall and 1-7 in league games.

UTPB got on the on the board first with a single run in both the second and third innings, but the Aggies rebounded fast, scoring one run in the fourth inning and then four more in the seventh to take the lead.

In the fourth, Cole Williams drove in Cody Bower on a sacrifice fly, and then in the seventh a fielding error by the first baseman allowed Colton Adams to score to tie the game at two runs apiece.  In the next at bat, Bower drove in Micah Kaaukai on a fielder's choice, and then Cody Knight doubled in Bower to double the CU lead to 4-2. Leno Ramirez capped off the inning by driving in  Knight on a single to right.

Cameron scored another run in their half of the eighth, as Williams led off the inning with a double, and then two batters later scored on a wild pitch to give CU the 6-2 advantage. They added another insurance run in the top of the ninth thanks to a Knight RBI single to give CU their 7-2 lead that would hold as Javarias Banks finished off UTPB with a one-two-three inning, including two strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.

Banks and Blake Welch split the duties pitching today, as Welch went the first 4.2 innings and Banks went the final 4.1. Welch gave up just one earned run on eight hits, while striking out three, before giving way to Banks who dominated the Falcons, throwing a perfect four and a third innings, while recording nine strikeouts.

Knight led CU at the plate, going 2-4 with two RBI, while Ramirez also had two hits and Bower scored three of CU's seven runs.

The Aggies face a tough task this upcoming week, as they host the third ranked West Texas A&M Buffs on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 13-15 in a four game series.
