4. The Lady Chaps started the season ranked No. 10 in the WBCA Preseason Poll, but after three losses in their last five contests, they have dropped out of the poll; they are still receiving 73 votes.Â
5. The Aggies are 8-2 all-time against LCU, with one of the two losses coming in a 67-54 defeat in Lubbock last December.Â
About the Aggies:Â
Cameron was unable to snap their losing streak last week, falling in their first two Lone Star Conference matchups to then No. 5 West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico. They have now lost four straight dating back to a 98-79 loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Nov. 21. Â
On the season, CU is third in the LSC in scoring, averaging 72.1 points per outing, but their scoring defense and margin are both towards the bottom of the league. From the field, they are shooting 39.4 percent, while hitting on 35.8 percent of their shots from the perimeter. Cameron also excels at controlling the glass, ranking third in the conference with 41.6 rebounds per game and first with 28.9 defensive boards per contest. One of the things that CU has most to work on is ball control, as they average a league leading 20.9 turnovers, compared to just 12.8 from their opposition.Â
Individually, freshman
Maighan Hedge leads the Black and Gold with 15.9 points per game while shooting 44.4 percent from the field and from three point range. She is also tops in the team with a free throw percentage of 95 percent and 10 steals. Halbleib is second on the team, not too far behind her teammate, with a scoring average of 15.3 points. The senior is also averaging 6.8 rebounds and shooting over 45 percent from the floor. Additionally,
Lejha Smith has a team best 56 rebounds and 11 blocks, while
Ava Battese, Halbleib, and Hedge have combined to go 63-154 from three point range this season.Â
Scouting the Lady Chaps:Â
After starting out the season with a 62-51 exhibition win over Southern Methodist and a 62-55 loss to New Mexico, Lubbock Christian began the regular season with a perfect 5-0 record with wins over a pair of LSC opponents in Texas A&M-Commerce and UT Permian Basin. Since then, the Lady Chaps have gone 2-3, falling to Tarleton State, No. 1 Central Missouri, and SWOSU.Â
While they still average just under 71 points per game, the defensive side of the ball is where LCU really excels, holding their opposition to just 57.1 points per contest. They use their length to average 7.7 steals and 3.6 blocks while holding teams to shooting just 37.1 percent from the field and 31.1 percent from three. As a team, the Lady Chaps are shooting 47.2 percent from the floor, 42.5 percent from three, and 75.3 percent from the charity stripe.Â
Robertson leads the team with 15.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from the perimeter. She averages 2.3 assists and has gone 34-40 from the foul line. Allie Schulte is second on the team with 12.0 points per game, while leading LCU with 39 assists and 23 steals. Additionally Maddi Chitsey averages 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds, while leading her squad with 14 blocks.Â
The Series vs. LCU:
- Cameron leads the overall series 8-2, with both losses coming on the road.Â
- Prior to last season's contest between the two teams, that had not met up since Dec. 5 of 2000.Â
- In last year's battle, the Aggies fell 67-54 to a LCU team that at that time was ranked No. 4 in the nation; Cameron shot just 32.8 percent from the field and went 4-17 from three in the loss.Â
Next Up:
Cameron will be on the road for their final two contests of 2018. First up will be a trip to San Antonio, Texas to take on St. Mary's on Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m. They will then end the calendar year with an exhibition contest against Stephen F. Austin on Dec. 29.Â
