About the Aggies:
Cameron only returns seven position players and five pitchers from a 2018 campaign that saw them go 15-32 and 5-19 in Lone Star Conference play. That squad finished sixth in the league and missed out of the conference tournament. Head Coach
Brady Huston has reloaded and with the assistance of first year assistant coach
Kyle Williams will look bounce back in 2019.
The Black and Gold will look to senior's
Trey Bigford,
Colton Adams, and
Briton Schiewe to lead this new group of Aggies at the plate. Bigford, who played every infield position except first last season, is CU's top returning hitter after a 2018 that saw him bat .282 with 27 runs scored and 15 RBI. Adams hit just .245 last season, but was 16-19 on the base paths and showed some pop with three homers and 23 RBI. They along with Schiewe,
Michael Flohr, and
Kameron Good were prominent pieces in the CU lineup in 2018.
On the mound, the Aggies return just five arms including seniors
Andrew Garza and
Sean Maher. After a breakout 2017, Garza dealt with injuries in 2018 that resulted in an inflated 7.39 ERA. Despite that, he lead the Aggies with 60 strikeouts in 70.2 innings pitched. The submarine arm Maher was a top relief man for Huston last season, posting a 2-3 record in 19 appearances; he tallied 48 strikeouts in just 35.1 innings of work. They are joined by fellow returning pitchers
Gaige Vines, who was 2-4 in 11 starts a year ago,
Alex Ward, and
Tyler Garcia.
With so many spots to fill in the lineup and on the mound, Coach Huston and Coach Williams did a great job recruiting, bringing 34 guys to help Cameron bounce back with a strong 2019. Included in that group are some skilled hitters in catcher
Hayden Jaco, who hit .333 at Indian State last year, outfielder
Myles Miller, who had a .331 batting average and a .425 on base percentage at Northwestern Ohio last season, and JUCO standouts
Tyler Wood,
Izrael Trevino, and
Jaylan Prince.Â
Cameron also has some strong new arms to throw out on the mound. Freshman
Cole Pretorius was a member of the MLB World Select Team for the Arizona Fall Classic, while
Drew Henderson posted a 1.53 ERA with 91 Ks in 64 innings as a senior. Another strong new arm is JUCO transfer
Devin Castro, who posted an 11-3 record, a 3.50 ERA, and 91 strikeouts at Trinidad State JC.
Scouting the Dustdevils:
Like Cameron, Texas A&M-International is looking for a bounce back season, as last season they went just 13-36 overall and 5-23 in Heartland Conference play. They were picked eighth in the Heartland Preseason Poll after batting .239 at the plate and posting a team ERA of 6.21 a year ago.
The Dustdevils added 34 new players in the offseason, and will have a completely different lineup then what they had when Cameron swept them to open up 2018. One of their returners, Matthew Trevino hit .276 with 19 RBI last season, while Rubin Solis, who led the team with 62 innings pitched with a 6.10 ERA and 35 Ks, and Mark Trimble, who had a team best 21 appearances last season, both return.
On Deck:
Cameron will have one more road series before their home opener, as they visit Lubbock Christian for a four game stint, Feb. 8-10.
