CU in search of wins at UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico

LAWTON, Okla. -- The Aggie women's basketball team needs to pick up a pair of wins on the road at UT Permian Basin and Western New Mexico to help them stay in the Lone Star Conference tournament race.

Week 8 Game Notes

Starting 5: 
1. The Aggies are in a race for the final spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament; MSU Texas and Texas A&M-Kingsville currently occupy the eight and ninth seeds with 5-9 conference records, while CU is in ninth with a 4-10 mark and Western New Mexico is right behind them at 3-11. 
2. Cameron junior Ava Battese made eight three pointers during last week's two game stretch; the Elgin, Okla. native now had 202 made threes for her career and is first in the LSC and 34th in Division II with 59 made three point field goals this season. 
3. UT Permian Basin is towards the bottom of the league in almost every statistical category, but Khali Pippins-Tryon is first in the LSC in field goals attempted and third in steals, while Juliette Akinwole is fourth in offensive rebounds per game.
4. Western New Mexico's Sara Lopez and Cassandra Vickery are ranked first and second in the league in minutes played, while Tatyanna McFarland is top-5 in rebounds, steals, and free throws attempted. 
5. UT Permian Basin has lost 12 games in a row dating back to Jan. 3, while the Mustangs have lost three in a row and CU has lost four straight. 

Week 7 Recap: 
Last week, Cameron faced two of the top teams in the conference, losing to Texas A&M-Commerce, 91-58, and Tarleton State, 69-67. Against the Lions, CU was outmatched down low, losing the rebounding battle 49-23 and getting outscored in the paint 54-24. TAMUC also went to the line 27 times, while the Aggies attempted just 10 free throws, making six of those. Battese led the Black and Gold with 15 points on 5-11 shooting from three while Parfitt McNair and Maighan Hedge each chipped in nine points. In the loss at TSU, Cameron let one slip away late as they led by six with four minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Tarleton State shot over 56 percent from the field in the second half while CU shot 46.4 percent and went just 1-4 from three point range. Lejha Smith recorded a CU career-high with 18 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor and 6-8 from the foul line, as Hedge added 16 points and Battese scored 11. 

About the Aggies: 
After losing their fourth game in a row last Saturday, Cameron now sits at 7-15 on the season and 4-10 against league opponents. Just two of their seven wins have come on the road: Nov. 9 against Newman and Jan. 26 against Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Aggies just over 70 points per game while allowing 77.3 to their opposition. They are shooting 40 percent from the field, 35.8 percent from three, and 67.1 percent from the charity stripe. Hedge leads the team with 15.2 points and 2.8 assists per outing, while Natalie Halbleib chips in 12.6 points and 6.8 rebounds per game and Battese averages 10.1 points. 

Scouting the Falcons: 
Last week, UT Permian Basin lost their 12th and 13th straight contest, falling to Eastern New Mexico 76-57 and West Texas A&M 93-57. They are now 3-19 overall and 0-14 in league play. The Falcons' last win came on Dec. 29 win the beat Texas A&M-International 87-44. On the season, UTPB averages just 56.4 points per game while giving up 68.6 to their opponents. From the field, they are shooting just 35.2 percent, while hitting on 26.3 percent of their shots from long range and 70 percent of their free throw attempts. Pippins-Tryon leads the way with 11.8 points and 2.2 steals per outing, while Lemia Ntor-Ue averages 8.9 points and Sarah Bersang chips in 8.8 points and 2.8 assists per game. 

Last Time Against UTPB:
The last time CU took on the Falcons it took longer than 40 minutes to get the 77-67 win; the Aggies outscored their opponent 14-4 in the overtime to secure the win. In the second half, Cameron shot just 39 percent from the field, but hit all nine of their free throw attempts, while UTPB went just 7-13  from the foul line in the second 20 minutes of play. Halbleib paced CU with 23 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks, and four steals, scoring nine of the team's 14 points in OT. McNair added 17 points to the winning effort and Hedge chipped in 10. Bersang scored 20 points for the Falcons. 

Scouting the Mustangs: 
Western New Mexico is now 7-13 on the season and 3-11 in league play after losing to WT 87-37 last Thursday and ENMU 59-44 last Saturday. Their three conference wins have come against UTPB (twice) and Cameron. The are averaging 55.4 points per contest while allowing their opposition to average 63.2 points on the other end of the floor. The Mustangs shoot just 36.4 percent from the floor, 29.7 percent from three, and 66.4 percent from the foul line. Ciara Fields leads the team with 10.3 points per outing, as Vickery adds 10.1 points and McFarland chips in 9.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per outing. 

Last Time Against WNMU:
Despite scoring 25 points in the fourth quarter in the first meeting with the Mustangs, Cameron could not complete the comeback, falling 67-64. CU shot just 33.9 percent from the field and 34.8 percent from the perimeter in the contest, while WNMU went to the foul line 32 times, making 22 of their attempts. The Mustangs also turned CU over 19 times, 10 of which came off steals. Halbleib led the Aggies with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Jazmin Luster scored 12 points in just 15 minutes of action and McNair added 10. Fields led the Mustangs with 20 points, while Lopez, McFarland, and Vickery all added double-digit scoring nights. 

Next Up:
Next week, Cameron will visit MSU Texas on Tuesday, Feb. 19 before hosting Texas Woman's on Thursday, Feb. 21 for "Pink Night".
