Week 9 Game Notes

1. Since the start of February, junior
Ava Battese has averaged 16 points, 4.4 made three pointers, and 34.4 minutes played during the five game span.Â

3. MSU Texas ranks No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference and eighth nationally with 5.2 blocks per game, led by Hannah Reynolds, who averages 2.1 rejections per outings, which is also first in the conference.Â
4.Texas Woman's Carissa Moody is first in the LSC and 35th in Division II with 10 doubles, averaging 13.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game while shooting almost 46 percent from the field.Â
5. MSU's Noel Johnson is in her 11th season at the helm, while TWU's Beth Jillson is in her 12th year at the school; Johnson has 147 wins at MSU and Jillson has totaled 176 for the Pioneers.Â
Week 8 Recap:Â
The Aggies lost their first and sixth straight games last week, falling to UT Permian Basin 66-65 and Western New Mexico 69-56. Their loss to UTPB was their second straight defeat by two or less points as they fell to Tarleton State 69-67, and their fifth loss on the season that was decided by five or less points. Cameron got 18 points efforts from Battese and
Maighan Hedge, but their 17 points in the fourth quarter was not enough to defeat the Falcons. Against the Mustangs of WNMU, the Aggies could not overcome a poor shooting second half and 20+ point third and fourth quarters from Western New Mexico. Battese led CU with 16 points while
Jazmin Luster tied a career-high with 12 points.Â
About the Aggies:Â
Cameron now sits at 7-17 on the season with a 4-12 LSC mark after their sixth straight loss on Saturday. They are averaging under 70 points for just the third time this season, scoring 69.3 per game while giving up 76.5 to their opponents. The Aggies are shooting 40 percent from the field, 35.6 percent from three, and 67.7 percent from the free throw line. They also grab 39 rebounds per outing while averaging 11.6 assists, 6.3 steals, and 2.9 blocks.Hedge averages 14.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while shooting over 42 percent from the floor and three point range, while
Natalie Halbleib scores 12.2 points and grabs 6.9 rebounds per contest and Battese averages 10.7 points.Â
Scouting the Mustangs:Â
MSU Texas has an overall record of 9-14 and a conference mark of 6-10 after their 1-1 split last week against Western New Mexico and UT Permian Basin. They are averaging 68.5 points per game with a scoring margin of 4.3. MSU shoots over 40 percent from the field, but hits on just 26.5 percent of their shots from three-point range. The Mustangs also bring in 38.2 rebounds, 15.1 assists, 8.3 steals, and a league-leading 5.1 blocks per outing. Reynolds and Chelcie Kizart are the lone MSU players averaging in double-figures as Reynolds averages 10.9 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks and Kizart averages 10.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per contest. Additionally, Liz Cathcart scores at a 9.6 clip and Kityana Diaz and Mica Schneider both average over eight points per game.Â
Last Time Against MSU:
Cameron led from the start when the Aggies and Mustangs met in Lawton earlier this season. CU outscored MSU 48-28 in the second and third quarters combined to earn the 80-59 win. It was a team-effort win as Halbleib and
Parfitt McNair both had 15 points, Hedge added 12 points and eight assists, while
Lejha Smith chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds. Reynolds led the Mustangs with 23 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals.Â
Scouting the Pioneers:Â
Texas Woman's has lost three straight and are now 9-15 overall this season and 6-10 in league play. They are coming off of a one point loss to Tarleton State this past Saturday. On the season, TWU is averaging 63 points per game, which is 4.5 points less than they are giving up to their opponents. They are shooting 39.5 percent from the field and lead the league with a 73.0 free throw percentage. The Pioneers are also averaging 38.2 rebounds, 10.7 assists, 6.3 steals, and 2.8 blocks per outing. Moody leads the way with 13.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, while Wilkerson averages 11.2 points and London Archer averages 8.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest.Â
Last Time Against TWU:
In their first battle this season, Cameron and Texas Woman's needed more than four quarters to decide a winner. The two teams matched each other stride for stride throughout the game as they were tied 11-11 after one quarter, CU led by three at the half, TWU led 43-42 at the end of three, and the score was tied 59-59 when the clock hit 0:00. The Aggies were 4-7 from the field, including two made threes, in the extra five minutes, but went just 1-4 from the foul line, while TWU was 6-6 from the charity stripe to secure the 72-70 win. Hedge led CU with 26 points on 9-16 shooting, while Halbleib added 19 points, three steals, and two blocks. Wilkerson led the Pioneers with 25 points, while both Archer (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Moody (15 points, 10 rebounds) had double-doubles.Â

The Aggies will conclude the regular season slate next week as they host Texas A&M-Kingsville on Thursday, Feb. 28, and Angelo State on Saturday, March 2. Saturday's game against the Rambelles will serve both as CU's Senior Day and Homecoming.Â
