Game Notes
LAWTON – For the first time this season, the Aggie women's basketball team are playing a team for the second time but not in a back-to-back format, as they host UT Permian Basin on Monday for a makeup of a game originally scheduled for December.
STARTING 5:
1. Cameron fell to 3-5 on the season after a pair of tough losses to Texas A&M-Kingsville this weekend, suffering their first weekend sweep of the 2020-21 campaign.
2. Sophomore
Stephanie Peterson averaged 18 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals over the two game series against the Javelinas; she has now scored 10 or more points in CU's last six games and is averaging 11.9 points and 6.8 rebounds this season.
3. This weekend
Maighan Hedge increased her career scoring total to 1,120 points, which moves her into sole possession of 10th place on the Aggie program scoring list right behind former teammate
Ava Battese.
4. Since their loss to Cameron earlier this season, UTPB has gone 3-6 with wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville, St. Edward's, and most recently Texas Woman's as they split all three of those series and were swept by top dog West Texas A&M.
5. Nokoia White is the lone Falcon player averaging over 10 points a game, as she brings in 10.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists during her 22.7 minutes player per contest.
LAST TIME OUT:
Cameron suffered their first sweep of the season this past weekend, losing a pair of tough battles against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Friday's game against the Javelinas was as close as it could get, but 11 missed free throws by the Aggies made the difference in the 77-71 loss.
Delecia Brown (15), Peterson (14), and
Logan Collyer (11) combined for 40 of CU's 71 points, but Hedge was held to just nine on 2-10 shooting. In Saturday's loss, the Aggies played three solid quarters, but were outscored 25-9 in the second, leading to the 78-70 defeat. Peterson went out and recorded a career-best 22 points with five made triples, while Hedge added 17 and
Karley Miller came out of nowhere for 11 points off the bench.
ABOUT THE AGGIES:
When the Aggies returned to action for the first time in over two weeks, they were greeting by a tough Texas A&M-Kingsville team that gave them their fourth and fifth losses of the season. Now 3-5, Cameron will need three wins this week to get back over .500 on the season. This past weekend, the Black and Gold upped their scoring average to 67.5 points per game, but their defensive woes put their scoring margin past zero and into the negative (-1.3). Two positives over the two game series against the Javelinas were three-point shooting and turnovers. CU, who broke multiple three-point records just a year ago, finally got going from long range, making nine and 12 three-pointers against TAMUK. Also, for the first time this season, CU kept their turnovers under 10 for both games (eight each), dropping their season average to 16.9, which is fifth best in the LSC. Despite scoring just nine points in Friday's game, Hedge remains the second leading scorer in the LSC at 16.4 points per game. She also has rounded out her game this year, averaging 5.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.8 steals through eight games this year. Peterson surpassed the 10 points per game plateau this weekend, now 11.9, and leads CU and is ninth in the LSC with 6.8 rebounds per outing.
SCOUTING THE FALCONS:
UT Permian Basin enters their makeup date with the Aggies with a 4-8 record after splitting a pair of games at Texas Woman's this past weekend. The Falcons came away with a 64-59 win in game one and then lost a heartbreaker 67-66 in Saturday's contest. One constant for the series and on the season for UTPB is their ability to force turnovers. They averaged 10 steals over the weekend and record 9.8 on the season, which helps result in 21.8 turnovers per game for their opposition. White is the lone UTPB player averaging over 10 points, while Alexus Quaadman and Morgan Helgesen both average over 6.0 points and 4.0 rebounds.
AGAINST UTPB:
For the first time this season, the Aggies are not playing someone back-to-back as these two teams played their first meeting back on Jan. 5. In that meeting, Cameron had another quick start that was negated by a poor second period as they were outscored 19-8. However, the came back firing in the third quarter and ended up wining the game 65-56. CU shot just 38.5 percent from the field, but converted on 16 of their 20 foul shots and out-rebounded the falcons by 10. Hedge dropped 25 points on UTPB, going 8-17 from the field and 5-10 from three. Peterson added a 12 point, 11 rebound double-double as well as five assists for CU. UTPB had just Nokoia White, 15 points on 6-16 shooting, reach double-figures while they shot 36 percent from the floor and were 9-15 from the charity stripe.
WHO HAS NEXT:
The Aggies remain at home following their makeup game against the Falcons as they host UT Tyler on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 5-6, for two more LSC crossover games.
