LAWTON – Trying to beat the projected inclement weather, the Cameron baseball team will host UT Permian Basin for a three-game series starting Thursday and then ending on Friday afternoon.
Originally schedule for a three-game, three-day series stretching from Friday-Sunday, head coach
Kyle Williams announced on Tuesday that the two teams will meet up for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday and then will try and play the finale on Friday with first pitch set for 1 p.m. at McCord Field.
Cameron played a quartet of games this past weekend, falling to the top team in the Northern Sun Athletic Conference Augustana in all four contests. The Vikings came into Lawton and put on a hitting clinic on their way to a sweep of the hometown Aggies.
The Aggies look to reset as they remain at .500 (3-3) in league play, which they return to this weekend against the Falcons, who are 2-7 in LSC games to start the 2021 campaign.
Williams' CU squad enters the series with UTPB hitting .231 with 57 runs scored through 10 games so far this season. The Aggies are tied for second in the LSC with 12 homers, which represent a third of their 34 extra-base hits.
Jayce Clem leads the efforts at the plate, hitting .429 with three homers, seven RBI, and 13 runs scored. The Randlett, Okla. native is top-10 in the conference in average, slugging, on base, and home runs.
Beau Williams is the only other Aggie hitting over .300 (.359). The sophomore infielder has three doubles, a triple, a homer, six RBI, and 10 runs scored this season.
The Aggie hurlers have had a rough start to the campaign, posting a 9.63 team ERA and a .333 opponents batting average with 92 combined strikeouts in 86.0 innings of work.
Floridian
Marcos Feria leads the squad with 22 K's in just 12.0 innings on the mound in his three starts. Clem is also a solid option for Williams as a relief pitcher, as leads the team with a .130 opponents' batting average and has punched-out 13 hitters in 7.1 innings of work.
Cameron is facing a UT Permian Basin team who is coming off a three loss weekend against Eastern New Mexico, two of those counted as Lone Star Conference games. Like CU, they are tied for second with 12 homers on the season, while hitting .263 with 56 runs scored.
Junior Nick Hernandez is a big reason for the success at the plate as he is hitting .441 with five homers and 11 RBI through nine games. UTPB also has Garret Thornton hitting .425 and Collin Fabio hitting .341 with nine RBI.
The Falcons sport a 6.56 ERA with 87 combined strikeouts and a .285 opposing batting average. Johnathon Rice has made two starts and has 17 K's in 12.1 innings on the mound, while Trever Berg leads the squad with 15.2 innings of work to go along with his 12 strikeouts.
All three games will be streamed via the LSC Digital Network. Any updates regarding game times and schedule can be found on CameronAggies.com or via social media @cameronaggies.com.
