LAWTON – The Aggies make their debut at McMahon Field this weekend as they host No. 18 Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday and Texas A&M International on Sunday.
Cameron is coming off a 2-2 weekend where the split doubleheaders with then No. 23 Angelo State and No. 25 Lubbock Christian. Cameron was just one out away from wins in both of their losses last week, falling to the Belles on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh and then losing to the Lady Chaps in extra-innings after leading in the bottom of the seventh.
Now 9-5 on the season and 2-2 in league play, the Aggies are hitting .315 as a team with 76 runs scored, eight homers, and 17 doubles at the plate. CU also leads the LSC in stolen bases with 34 in 38 attempts.
Five Aggie hitters are up over the .300 mark in terms of batting average, led by
Khmari Edwards with a .378 averaged. The CU second baseman leads the team with 17 hits and has 10 RBI and 12 runs scored.
Mikayla Richmond, hitting .370, also had 17 hits and has scored nine runs and is 10-11 in stolen base attempts.
Brenna Busby and
Callie Christensen provide the pop for CU, as Busby has two homers, seven RBI, and 18 runs scored at the top of the CU lineup and Christensen leads CU with three bombs, 13 RBI, and has scored 11 times. Maydson Marvulli is also contributing at the plate, driving in 10 runs and hitting .333 in 33 at-bats.
Cameron's pitching staff has posted a 3.40 ERA in 94.2 innings of work. They own 77 combined strikeouts and opposing hitters are swinging the bat to a tune of just .251 against them. Those efforts are led by senior
Bethany Hines, who is 5-2 in the circle with 45 punch-outs in 49.1 innings of work.
The Aggies' Friday opponent, Texas A&M-Kingsville, is one of the top teams in the nation, coming in at No. 17 in the NFCA rankings. They are 9-1 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in league play. However, they have played just one true road contest with their first LSC wins coming against St. Edward's and St. Mary's at home last weekend.
Kingsville boasts a .346 team batting average with 63 runs scored and 23 extra-base hits. They are led by Kayla Gonzales, who is hitting a scorching .581 with 18 hits and 17 RBI, which is third most in the LSC. They add six other hitters who qualify with above-.300 averages, including Jory Cervantes and Loren Kelly who both have 12 hits and nine runs scored on the year.
The Hogs have been dominant in the circle, owning a team-ERA of 1.68 with 73 strikeouts in 71 innings played. Saidi Castillo is 4-0 with a 0.88 ERA and 29 strikeouts, while Beth Montes is 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA and limits opposing hitters to a .109 average.
After getting past the Javelinas, CU will host a Texas A&M International, who has had a solid start to the season as well. The Dustdevils are 8-5 overall and 3-1 in league play and have defeated a pair of ranked opponents this season.
The TAMUI offense has not had the same success as the Aggies and Javelinas, as they are hitting .259 with 52 runs and 27 extra-base hits. The have a quartet of hitters with a qualifying average over .300, including Victoria Gonzalez, who is hitting .389 with eight RBI and five runs scored. Darrian Smith leads the squad with three homers and 11 driven in with a .316 average.
In the circle, the Dustdevlis own a 3.75 team ERA with 89 K's and a .261 opponents' batting average. Erika Cortez has made seven starts and is 4-3 for TAMIU while striking out 70 batters, which leads the Lone Star Conference.
Due to forecasted storms late on Friday, the CU and Kingsville softball doubleheader has been moved up to start at noon, while Sunday's twin-bill against International will also begin at noon at the McMahon Field and Athletics Center. All four games will be streamed via the LSC Digital Network.
