LAWTON – After going 5-1 last week, the Cameron softball team looks to keep up their momentum heading into the weekend when they will visit Texas Woman's and Midwestern State for a pair of doubleheaders.
The Aggies got big weeks at the plate by
Haley Castle and
Brenna Busby and three strong near-untouchable outings from
Breley Webb as they won games against Oklahoma Baptist and Fort Hays State, swept St. Mary's, and then split with St. Edward's during last week's action. CU is now 14-10 on the season and 5-7 in league play.
Kayla Adams' CU squad ranks near the top of the Lone Star Conference with a .322 batting average to go along with 141 runs scored and 19 home runs. They also make things happen once the reach base, recording 60 steals in 69 attempts.
Khmari Edwards leads the offense attack with a .397 batting average, 22 runs scored, and 23 RBI. She is one of five Aggies who qualify with plate appearances hitting over .340. Busby is one of those, as the senior shortstop averages .386 at the plate with 29 runs scored, five homers, and 13 RBI. Edwards, Busby, and
Mikayla Richmond (.366 with 17 runs scored) all have over 15 stolen bases on the season.
Castle, who was anmed the LSC Hitter of the Week on Tuesday, leads CU with six homers to go along with a .390 average and 17 RBI. Her .878 slugging percentage would be tops in the conference if her minimum at bats qualified.
Callie Christensen is tied with her sister for the second most homes on the squad with five to go along with a .342 average and 17 RBI.
Webb has gotten done both at the plate and the circle for CU. The sophomore is hitting .347 with eight doubles and 10 RBI. After throwing a no-hitter and a three-hit shutout with 25 strikeouts over three games last week, her numbers in the circle have sky-rocketed. She owns a team-best 2.38 ERA with 59 K's in 56 innings of work.
As a staff, CU owns a 3.51 ERA and 142 combined strikeouts. Senior
Bethany Hines is tied with Webb for the team lead in strikeouts (59), recording her 500th career punch-out last week against St. Mary's. Freshman
Jocelyn Bright has 22 K's in 24.1 innings in the circle for the Aggies.
Cameron's first opponent, Texas Woman's, who they face on Friday, has lost seven straight and is 4-13 on the season and 3-9 in LSC play. The Pioneers are hitting just .235 with 44 runs scored and 24 extra-base hits. Paige Tamaya leads the way with a .381 average and four homers, while Taylor Goulet leads the team with 11 RBI. Their pitching staff has combined for a 3.91 ERA and 80 strikeouts in 111.0 innings in the circle. Tatum Quaker has eaten up 50 of those innings with 55 K's and a 3.22 ERA.
The Aggies' Sunday opponent, Midwestern State, is also on a losing streak, dropping their last 10 games to fall to 11-13 overall and 4-8 against league opponents. They are hitting .291 as a team with 99 runs scored and 22 homers. Cache, Okla. native Ashley Turner leads the squad with a .425 average and 24 runs scored, while junior Jacey Henry leads MSU with 18 RBI and six homers while hitting .298. The Mustang hurlers have combined for a 4.66 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 145.2 innings of work. Henry has a team-low 3.72 ERA but just 10 K's in just over 43 innings in the circle, while Kaitlyn Turner leads the staff with 47 strikeouts in her 12 starts.
Friday's doubleheader in Denton, Texas is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. with limited spectators and no walk-up ticket sales allowed at Dianne Baker Field. Mustang Park in Wichita Falls, Texas is at 50-percent capacity with tickets only available at msumustangs.com. The Sunday doubleheader against MSU is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
