Cameron set for three-game road series at OC

LAWTON – The Cameron baseball team heads to Oklahoma Christian for a three-game set this weekend.

The Aggies snapped a 10-game skid with an 8-7 win over UAFS in the first game of their series last week. However, despite a pair of strong starts on the mound by Tyler Cornett and Marcos Feria, CU was unable to take the series, falling 5-2 in both games of the series finale doubleheader.

Cameron has been lacking in the quality start column this season but were the benefit of three of them against the Lions. Michael Womack opened the weekend up with a four strikeout effort in five innings in game one. The Aggie staff combined for 12 strikeouts in the 8-7 win, while the power bats of Erik Ohman and Beau Williams led the CU offense, that recorded a season-high 12 hits in the win.

Cornett lasted six innings in the game two start, giving up just three hits and two runs with three punch-outs. However, a three-run 10th inning by the Lions led to the CU loss. Feria gave the Black and Gold one of their best starts of the season in game three, going 7.1 innings and giving up just three hits and striking out nine UAFS hitters. Cameron's bullpen was hit for four runs in the ninth inning, leading to another 5-2 defeat.

Cameron head coach Kyle Williams will need those same efforts from his starting pitchers if the Aggies want to take down Oklahoma Christian this weekend, after the Eagles 45 runs in a three-game sweep of Eastern New Mexico last weekend.

The Eagles are 11-9 on the year and 10-8 in league play after earning the three wins against the Greyhounds. They are hitting .300 on the year with 163 runs scored and 33 home runs, which leads the Lone Star Conference. That power surge is led by Michael DiFiore, who leads the LSC with eight homers, while Blake Empkey has six and Chance Westervelt has five. Westervelt is also hitting .414 with 20 RBI, Empkey has 23 RBI and a .341 average, and DiFiore leads the team with 25 RBI and is batting .337.

Oklahoma Christian's pitching staff owns a 6.99 ERA with 164 combined strikeouts in 170 innings played. Gabe Rodery is 5-0 with a 3.54 ERA in six starts. He leads the team with 35 strikeouts and has held opposing hitters to just a .224 average. Julien Ly owns the lowest ERA on the squad at 3.00, while going 3-1 in six starts with 29 punch-outs.

Cameron's offense is hitting just .231 this season with 88 runs scored and 53 extra-base hits, 18 of which are homers. Despite falling below .400, Jayce Clem still leads the team with a .386 batting average while leading the squad with four homers and 16 runs scored to go along with 12 RBI. Williams is hitting .324 with 12 RBI and 15 runs scored, while Ohman has hit four home runs and scored 12 runs this season.

The pitching staff turns in an 8.98 ERA and 166 strikeouts in 162.1 innings of work. Feria leads the squad with 37 of those K's while holding the opposition to just a .221 average against him in 24.2 innings. Clem has also been solid on the mound for the Aggies, as he has struck out 20 batters in 11.1 innings, while Cornett has recorded 24 punch-outs in hits 20.2 innings on the mound.

Cameron and Oklahoma Christian will begin the three-game LSC series in Oklahoma City, Okla. on Friday, April 2 with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The series wraps up on Saturday, April 3, with a single game also scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
