Cameron battles No. 12 ASU this weekend

LAWTON – The Cameron baseball team is set for a tough three-game, three-day series against No. 12 Angelo State this weekend at McCord Field.

The Aggies, who are coming off 9-5 non-conference loss to Southwestern Oklahoma State on Wednesday, are looking for their first series win since February. However, they will have to go through the top-15 ranked Rams, who own one of the top offensive teams in all of NCAA Division II.

Angelo State, ranked No. 12 in the NCBWA poll with a 24-6 overall record and a 19-5 league mark, is first in the Lone Star Conference in almost every offensive category. They are hitting .334 with 317 runs scored, 103 runs scored, and 88 stolen bases. All-American outfielder Josh Elvir leads the way with a .405 average, 49 runs scored, eight homers, and 31 RBI, while Jordan Williams, Aaron Walters, and Jackson Hardy are all batting .360.

The ASU pitching staff has also been solid this season, turning in a 3.43 team ERA with 245 combined strikeouts and a .249 opponents' batting average. Trent Baker is the work-horse of the group, throwing 57 innings in nine starts with an 8-1 record and 65 strikeouts. Lefty Benjamin Elder has six wins in eight starts for ASU, striking out 40 hitters and posting a 1.72 ERA in 47 innings. Carson Childers is the top bullpen arm, making 14 appearances with 29 innings of work and 32 K's and a .153 OBA.

Cameron enters the weekend against the Rams with a 5-25 season record and a 5-19 record against LSC opponents. They are batting .239 as a team with 143 runs scored and 86 extra-base hits, 29 of which have been home runs. Jayce Clem leads CU with a .388 batting average and nine homers but has missed the last four games.

Erik Ohman and Jordan Harrison-Dudley have been the Aggies' hottest hitters this month. Ohman had four hits in Wednesday's game against SWOSU and is batting .320 with 11 runs scored since being moved to the leadoff spot in the lineup. Harrison-Dudley is batting .388 since the month began and has seven doubles and nine RBI during that span.

The Aggie pitching staff has combined for 236 strikeouts in 253 innings of work, but their biggest program has been control, as they have issued 198 walks and hit 71 batters this season. Starter Marcos Feria leads the team with 51 strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .272 average. Tyler Cornett is second on the team with 34 K's, while Michael Womack owns a .268 OBA with 25 punch-outs in eight starts for CU.

Cameron and Angelo State are scheduled to begin their scheduled at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night for game one. Game two is set to also start at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday night, while the third and final game is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at McCord Field. All three games will be stream via the LSC Digital Network.
