Aggies sweep double header with ECU to start out 2014 season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ADA, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team starts out the season on a two game winning streak, sweeping the double header against East Central Oklahoma in Ada this afternoon.

After coming off a down year last season, the Aggies brought in a lot of new faces that contributed early, and helped the Aggies get the 2014 season started off right.

"Anytime you go out and get two wins on opening day is a good feeling.... I thought we competed well in all aspects and we learned some things about our club today," said head coach Todd Holland.

"We had some guys get their first collegiate hit and RBI and that's exciting. Our pitchers did a phenomenal job today, starters Tobin Mateychick and Drew Reidt really threw well and gave us a chance all day. Josh Neilson earned his first save of the year and Ryan Daspin was good as well. Offensively, Brad Blumer, Garrett Schaede, Jordan Climpson, and Kas Sanders all had good days for us."

Game one was the first look at the 2014 Aggies, and pitching controlled the diamond in the seven inning game.

Cameron got seven strong innings from Mateychick, a transfer from Wichita State, who then turned it over to Neilson in the seventh to close out the game. Mateychick gave up three hits, one earned run, struck out four, and walked three in his first six innings as an Aggie.

East Central's Lucas Kaplan had a solid day on the mound as well, going all seven innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and striking out two.

Cameron got on the board first in the top of the second inning. After doubling to right, senior Blumer scored on a single up the middle from freshman DH Cody Knight for the Aggies first run of the season.

After three scoreless innings, CU extended the lead in the top of the sixth on a Climpson RBI single to left, scoring Sanders, who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. ECU cut the gap in the bottom of the inning, as Nick Spini doubled to right, bringing home Garrett Donohoe to make it a 2-1 lead.

The Aggies threatened to put more runs on the board in the top of the seventh, but after getting runners on second and third with one out, CU was stalled out by Kaplan who got a popout and a strikeout to end the inning. Neilson came into the game in the bottom of the seventh to close it out, and got two quick outs on a groundout and strikeout. After giving up a pinch hit single to ECU's Ethan Gold, Neilson got Ty Huie to pop out to end the game.

After only scoring two in game one, the Aggie offense sparked for seven runs in game two, and were powered by another solid start from their starting pitcher. Reidt got the start in game two, and went six innings, gave up seven hits, one earned run, one walk, and struck out four, with Daspin coming in and pitching the seventh.

The Tigers had to use three pitchers in game two, with Icezack Flemming earning the loss, giving up seven hits, with four earned runs, three walks, and seven strikeouts in five innings of work.

Cameron didn't take long to get on the board, scoring their first run in the top of the first, via a RBI from Mateychick, who hit into a fielder's choice to score Codey McElroy.

The Aggies got three more in the top of the third, the first on and RBI single from Climpson, which scored Sanders. Schaede tripled in two more in the next at bat, scoring Blumer and Climpson to make it 4-0.

After getting another run in the fourth, on a passed ball that scored Tyler Palmer, the Aggies extended the lead to seven in the top of the fifth. The first was on an error that scored Mateychick, and the second on another passed ball that scored Schaede, who reached on the error earlier.

The Tigers got their lone run in the bottom of the sixth, as David Terrazas grounded out to score Luc Pomales.

On the day, Blumer was 3-7 with three runs scored, while Sanders went 2-6 with two runs scored. Both Climpson and Schaede were 2-7 with two RBI a piece, and Knight was 1-3 with an RBI.

The two teams were scheduled to play a third game tomorrow afternoon, but due to expected inclement weather, the game will no longer be played.

The Aggies will take the field on Tuesday, February 4 for their home opener against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
