Baseball splits series with Northwest Missouri

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LAWTON, Okla. – Cameron closed out their series with Northwest Missouri State with a split for the second day in a row on Saturday.

The Aggies (5-5) took the first game of the doubleheader 9-6 but they would drop the second game in the final innings 5-4 to the Bearcats.

Cameron jumped ahead in the first after loading the bases with no outs and Brad Blumer would push across Tobin Mateychick home with a fielder's choice to make it a 1-0 game. Northwest Missouri State quickly tied the game in the top of the second with a leadoff homer over the left field fence.

The Bearcats added a run off of a double in the third to give them the 2-1 edge of Cameron. However, that lead didn't last long after a pair of CU walks Harold Cannon smack a homer to overtake the Bearcats 4-2 after three innings.

Back-to-back leadoff homers in the fourth and fifth by the Bearcats would tie the game at four.

In the home half of the fifth Cameron busted the gates open with four hits and five runs to jump ahead 9-4. Northwest Missouri State knocked in a run in the sixth and seventh but they wouldn't chase down CU in the 9-6 win.

Cannon went 2 for 4 and 3 RBI and Blumer had a hit and 2 RBI; Brian Schwabe tossed 4 2/3 innings with four runs given up in the no-decision, Josh Neilson (1-0) came out of the bullpen and went the last 2 1/3 innings for his first win of the season.

In the final game of the series both teams traded leads but Northwest Missouri would get the go-ahead run in the ninth to win 5-4.

Northwest Missouri struck first by manufacturing a run in the third that started with a double to lead 1-0 in the third.

Cameron's offense kicked into gear in the fifth after a leadoff single by Jordan Climpson, Codey McElroy would then drive Climpson in after a triple; McElroy then scored off of a wild pitch for CU's second run. Blumer then reached off of a seeing-eye single and advanced to second off of a throwing error. Matt Nilmeyer capped the inning off with a RBI single to give CU the 3-1 lead.

In the sixth Northwest Missouri had back-to-back hits and tied the game at three each with a two RBI single. Cameron came back in the bottom frame and produced a run off of a ground out to swing back ahead 4-3.

The lead was short lived and in the seventh the Bearcats tied the game at four off of a two out RBI single; they would get the go ahead run in the ninth off of a bases loaded one out walk.

Cameron didn't go down without a fight through and got the tying run 90 feet away and winning run at second with two outs but they couldn't push the run home to fall 5-4.

Blumer, McElory, Nilmeyer, and Tyler Plamer all had multi-hit games for Cameron.

Steve Matta started and went six innings but was charged with the no-decision, Jacob Winters (0-1) came out of the bullpen and tossed two innings in the loss.

Cameron will have an extended break until Feb. 25 where they will travel to McMurry for a doubleheader.
