CU baseball heads to Tarleton State for LSC battle

LAWTON, Okla. – After a four game home stand, the Cameron University baseball team will take to the road for a four game series with Tarleton State, April 18-19.

Cameron broke their four game losing streak on Tuesday as they beat in-state foe Southwestern Oklahoma State, 15-6. Codey McElroy and Matt Nilmeyer both drove in three runs for the Aggies, as Brandon Raidy, Jordan Climpson, and Garrett Schaede each drove in two runs of their own. Ryan Daspin got the W, going four innings and giving up only one run on three hits with three strikeouts.

With the win over SWOSU, the Aggies are 13-23 on the season, but since it was a non-conference game, they did not make any ground in the Lone Star Conference standings, remaining at 7-17 in league play.

Earlier this season, the Texans made the trip down to Lawton for a four game series, but rain cut the trip short as TSU swept games one and two, but games three and four were canceled.

Cameron has a .264 team batting average with a .344 slugging percentage, a 348 on base percentage, and 62 extra base hits. On the mound, they have a team ERA of 5.01 while opposing hitters are hitting .291 off the CU pitching staff.

Brad Blumer continues to lead the Aggies with a .322 average and 38 hits, while McElroy has made strides of late, hitting .303 with a team leading 19 RBI, 29 runs scored, and a LSC leading 12 doubles. Nilmeyer, Harold Cannon, and Climpson have all moved their averages above .260, with each of them having 11 RBI or over as well.

Three of Cameron's starting pitchers, Drew Reidt, Brian Schwabe, and Steve Matta, have all proved that they can shut down the opposition with each of them having a LSC Pitcher of the Week award under their belts. Schwabe's .236 opposing batting average and both his and Reidt's 40 strikeouts a piece are in the top-10 in their respective categories the LSC.

As for Tarleton State, their four game winning streak was snapped by St. Mary's this past week as TSU fell 8-7 in San Antonio. They are now 21-17 for the season with an 11-13 LSC record. As a team, the Texans are hitting .289/.415/.374 with 94 extra base hits, and on the mound the have a team ERA of 3.87 and an opposing batting average of .291.

Jared Musgrove leads both the team and the LSC in hitting with a .425 average and a .520 on base percentage. Additionally, three other players for TSU are hitting above .300 with Alvaro Moreno leading the team with 49 hits and tied for the lead with 25 RBI, while Rustin Thomas has a team leading 31 runs scored.

On the mound, Colton Burleson (4-4 with a 2.70 ERA and 33 strikeouts) and Robert Baker (5-4 with a 3.41 ERA and 40 strikeouts) lead a strong pitching staff with over 60 innings pitched each.

The series will consist of two double headers on both Friday, April 18 at 2 p.m. and Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. Live Stats will be available at tarletonsports.com.

Following the series with Tarleton State, the Aggies will head to Eastern New Mexico for a three game series with the Greyhounds, April 25-26.
