Aggies look to keep up momentum at Eastern New Mexico

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team tries to keep their Lone Star Conference playoff hope alive as they head to Eastern New Mexico this weekend for a three game series.

The 16-24 Aggies took three out of four games at Tarleton State in their series last weekend and are now 10-18 in LSC play. This leaves them have a game back of Eastern New Mexico, who is in fifth in the conference standings, and are a couple games back of Tarleton State, who are in fourth and as of right now are the last team in the conference tournament.

Cameron is batting .259 as a team with a .341 slugging percentage and a .342 on base percentage. They have a combination of 68 extra base hits, including 11 homeruns, six coming from their last two series. Brad Blumer continues to lead the team with a .319 average, while Codey McElroy is hitting .303 with a team leading 40 hits, 30 runs scored, 22 RBI, and four homers.

On the bump, the Ags have a team ERA of 4.79 and an opposing batting average of .288. Drew Reidt is 5-6 with an ERA of 3.30 with 41 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched for the black and gold, while Brian Schwabe is 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched. Additionally, Tobin Mateychick, who is second on the team with 17 RBI, now has five saves on the season to go along with his 3.68 ERA.

The Greyhounds are an even .500 on the season with a 22-22 overall record and an 11-18 LSC mark. They are coming off a loss to #8 Lubbock Christian, 2-9 back on Tuesday. ENMU is 12-8 at home this season, and took three out of four from the Aggies in Lawton back in March.

As a team, Eastern New Mexico is hitting .290 with 97 extra base hits, including 21 homers. They team is also second in the LSC in stolen bases with 74 out of 98 attempts. Matthew Burks is batting .369 for ENMU and leads the team with 62 hits, 42 runs scored, and 26 RBI. He is also tied with Blake Cooper for the team lead with eight home runs apiece. Additionally, Brett Ackerman is batting .358, while the Greyhounds have four other player batting .290 or better.

On the mound, Eastern New Mexico has a team ERA of 4.91 with opposing hitters hitting .284 off of them. Individually, Matthew Artalejo leads the team with a 3.39 ERA, a 6-4 record, and has 35 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched, while Rusty Edwards is 4-3 with a 3.83 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 51.2 innings pitched, and Ben Monticello is 4-4 with a 4.68 ERA and 38 punch outs in 73 innings pitched.

The three game series between the Aggies and the Greyhounds will start with a single game on Friday, April 25 at 6 p.m. and will conclude with a double header on Saturday, April 26 starting at 1 p.m.

Following the series in Portalles, the Aggies will take their last road trip of the 2014 season as they head to Abilene, Texas to face McMurry in a double header on Tuesday, April 29 starting at 2 p.m. They will then close out the regular season by hosting West Texas A&M for a three game series, May 2-3.
