CU's comeback falls short at McMurry

Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Despite their own late inning comeback, the Cameron University baseball suffers a 7-6 loss to McMurry on a walk-off hit in the ninth.

The War Hawks took a 2-0 lead early, as they scored the first runs of the ball game in the bottom of the second on a two RBI double. They then added another run in the fourth on a solo shot to make it 3-0.

The Aggies cut the lead back to two in the top of the sixth, thanks to a Tobin Mateychick RBI double that scored Matt Nilmeyer. In the bottom half of the sixth, McMurry built their lead up to 5-1 on a fielder's choice RBI.

Cameron put on the comeback in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on six hits and a War Hawk error. It all started with Tyler Palmer reaching on an error and then scoring on a double that hit off the top of the wall off the bat of Brandon Raidy. Kas Sanders then came up and singled up the middle, advancing Raidy to third. With runner at first and third, Codey McElroy hit another single up the middle to score Raidy and make it 5-3 with no outs still.

After a pitching change and a strikeout, Nilmeyer single in Sanders to make it 5-4. After a pop-out, Brad Blumer came in to pinch hit and singled to right to score McElroy and tie up the ball game. Cameron took a 6-5 lead when Codey Knight came up and singled in Nilmeyer, with Blumer getting thrown out at home to end the inning.

McMurry tied the ball game up in the bottom of the eighth on a two out wild pitch by Brent Hendy, making it 6-6 heading into the ninth inning.

After the Aggies threatened in the top of the ninth, getting runners on first and second but failing to score, McMurry got a one out triple to put the winning out on third with two outs to work with. After an intentional walk and a pitching change, the War Hawks got a line drive over the shortstops head by AJ Dupree to score the winning run on a walk-off hit.

The loss was charged to Hendy, giving him his second loss of the season, after going 1.1 innings and being responsible for the final two runs of the ball game. MU's Mitch Labbie got the win, going two innings and striking out two Aggie batters.

At the plate, Nilmeyer had a solid day for the black and gold, going 2-3, reaching base five times, scoring two runs and driving in one. Additionally, both Mateychick and McElroy had two hits and one RBI each, while Sanders was 1-2 with a run scored and three walks.

The Aggies will return to action this weekend, as the close out the regular season, hosting West Texas A&M for a three game series, May 2-3.
