LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team gears up for their final home games of the 2014 season as they host West Texas A&M for a three game series, May 1-2.
After falling in their last contest against non-conference opponent McMurry on Tuesday, CU is now 17-27 on the year with an 11-20 Lone Star Conference record. This has them at the bottom of the league standings, and a couple games back of Eastern New Mexico, who is in fifth.
Earlier this season, when the Aggies went down to Canyon they came away with a two game split against the Buffs, winning games one and two of the series. Since then, Cameron has gone 6-12 in their contests.
CU is now batting .262 at the plate, with a .353 slugging percentage, and a .348 on base percentage. They have a total of 79 extra base hits, including 16 home runs, eight of which have come in the past two weeks.
Brad Blumer leads the team with a .320 average, while
Codey McElroy is batting .304 with a team leading, 45 hits, 33 runs scored, 23 RBI, and four homers. McElroy also leads both the team and the LSC in doubles with 14. Also leading the team with four homers is
Harold Cannon, who has seen his average jump up to .283 recently, while driving in 20 RBI of his own.
Matt Nilmeyer continues to be an on base machine, hitting .291, leading the team in steals, and reaching base in all five of his at bats against McMurry.
On the mound, the Aggies have a team ERA of 5.35 with an opponent's batting average of .299. Individually,
Drew Reidt has been solid for the black and gold, going 6-6 with a 3.58 ERA and 44 strikeouts.
Brian Schwabe's last start raised his ERA up to 4.91, but the senior still leads the team with 44 strikeouts and has an opponent's batting average of .269 to go along with his 3-4 record.
Additionally,
Tobin Mateychick has contributed on the mound and in the batter's box for the Aggies, batting .244 with 23 RBI and throwing 22 innings with a 3.68 ERA, 14 strikeouts and a team leading five saves.
The 32-15 West Texas A&M Buffalos enter the series with a 20-12 record and sit comfortable in second in the Lone Star Conference Standings. The Buffs lead the conference in hitting with a .318 team batting average, a .430 slugging percentage, and .380 on base percentage with 128 extra base hits. On the mound, WT is second in the LSC with a 3.87 team ERA and lead the league with 380 total strikeouts. They also have a .966 Fielding percentage and only 60 errors this season.
Individually, Tyler McKinght leads the LSC and the team with a .399 batting average. Nick Chapman, who has a .386 average, leads the league with 73 hits, and Aaron Blair, with a .333 average, leads the LSC with 39 RBI. Additionally, the Buffs have seven players with averages above .300 and over 100 at bats.
WT's ace, Dylan James, who is 8-2, leads the league in innings pitched at 85, opponent's batting average at .195, strikeouts at 110, and is second with a 2.44 ERA. Additionally, Joshua Wyker (7-5 with a 4.09 ERA and 60 punch-outs) and Scott Cone (5-2 with a 3.82 ERA and 62 strikeouts), make up the other part of the Buffs starting rotation that lead a solid pitching staff.
The series will start with a single nine inning game on Friday, May 2 at 3 p.m., and will continue on Saturday, May 3 with a double header starting at 1 p.m.
In addition to this being the last series of the 2014 season at McCord Field, It will also be the last time that 14 seniors will dawn the black and gold in front of the home crowd.
