LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team will look to continue their hot start as they host the William Jewell Cardinals for a three game series this weekend, Feb. 17-19.

CU is off to a good start, going 7-1 in their first two series against Southern Nazarene and Southwestern Oklahoma State. Most recently they went 3-1 in a four game series against SWOSU, which saw the Aggies put 48 runs on the board during the two doubleheaders. They are hitting .386 with a .653 slugging percentage, a .460 on base percentage, and 78 runs scored on the young season. On the mound, Cameron has a high team ERA of 6.10 in a combined 59 innings pitched, but the staff is holding opposing hitters to a .260 batting average against them.

Individually, Cody Bower stole the show against the Bulldogs, as he hit .632 with a 1.142 slugging percentage while racking up 12 hits, nine runs, and 10 RBI during the four game series. His two doubles, two triples, and three homers on the week helped earn him Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week. Bower did most of his damage in the first game of the series, going 6-6 with five runs scored, seven RBI, two triples, and three homers all in one game.  He currently leads CU with 15 RBI and 13 runs scored this season. Additionally, Micah Kaaukai and Victor DeJesus are both hitting over .519, while Bower and Jorden Fields are hitting .500.

Andrew Garza has been CU's workhorse over the first eight games, going 2-0 in 11 innings pitched while compiling a 3.27 ERA and an opponent's batting average of just .190. Oswaldo Godina has made two starts and leads CU with nine strikeouts, while Tyler Abrego has made four appearances and pitched eight innings.

William Jewell was picked to finish third in the Western Division of the Great Lakes Valley Conference in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll. They went 32-22 last season, and went 0-4 against Cameron to begin the 2016 season; Bower had six RBI against WJC in the four game series. Returning for the Cardinals is Dylan Christie, who finished second in the GLVC in homers with 16, and Garret McKinzie, a GLVC first-team selection who hit .354 with 16 homers and 52 RBI last season.

The two teams are scheduled to play three nine inning games, starting on Friday, Feb. 17 at 2 p.m. Friday's game will be followed by a game on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 2 p.m., and then the series will conclude with Sunday, Feb. 19 with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
