Tournament Bracket
LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron baseball team will repeat last year's Lone Star Conference tournament opening game by squaring off against first-seed and tournament host Angelo State as the Aggies hold the fourth spot in the lineup.
Cameron clinched the final postseason spot over the weekend by completing a four game sweep of Texas A&M-Kingsville, aided by an Eastern New Mexico loss to UT-Permian Basin, which lifted the Aggies above Tarleton State in league standings.
The Javelinas' four losses to CU dropped them from a first place spot in the conference, bringing Angelo State its second straight and fourth overall LSC regular season title as they enter the tournament as the top seed and host.
Texas A&M-Kingsville is the No. 2 seed, while West Texas A&M is the third seed, and Cameron fourth.
Cameron is 8-6 this year against teams in the tournament. The Aggies were swept in four games by ASU, split two games with WT and stumped TAMUK seven games to one during the regular season.
This year marks CU's second straight postseason appearance. Last season was the Aggies' first appearance since 2011 as they opened the tournament as the fourth seed and defeated first seed ASU 5-2 in game one.
However, the Aggies would fall 8-7 to WT in an extra inning and could not secure a second win against the Rams to fall 9-5 in the elimination game. WT would go onto win the championship over ASU with a 5-1 victory.
Cameron enters the tournament coming off a solid weekend of pitching against TAMUK. Senior right-handed pitcher
Javarias Banks was named LSC pitcher of the week for his two hit complete game shutout of the Javelinas on Saturday.
Starters
Andrew Garza, Matt Glassman and
John Millan also tallied wins on the mound. At the plate
Cody Knight and
Luke Hughes led with 4 RBI during the weekend.
Team batting average leader (.435)
Micah Kaaukai is currently on a 13 game hitting streak, while teammate
Leno Ramirez has reached base in 22 consecutive games.
For the Rams, Jacob Boston (.382) leads the team in batting average and Mitch Henshaw was recently named LSC hitter of the week for his 8 RBI, ten hit, two home run performance against WT this weekend.
ASU holds the leagues' best team batting average at .340 and second pitching ERA with a 3.78 clip. Their ace Matt Shannon hosts a 2.76 ERA and has struck out 73 batters this season. He is 8-3 on the mound.
Fellow starter Ryan Smith is a perfect 10-0 with a 3.57 ERA while Joe Hauser has a league best 12 saves.
The double-elimination event begins on Thursday and concludes on Saturday with the league championship game.
