Cameron heads south to take on Texans

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron University baseball team will look to rebound from their four game losing stretch as they take on Lone Star Conference foe Tarleton State in a four game non-conference series.

Due to LSC regulations, any contest against a league opponent played before the eighth week of the season will not count towards the teams' conference records. CU and the Texans will start their four game series on Friday, March 9 at 3 p.m. They will then play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 10 beginning at 1 p.m., followed by a single game on Sunday, March 11 with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.

The Aggies are 7-7 and are coming off of a 10-3 loss on Tuesday against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Cameron had four errors against the Savage Storm and an early five run second inning was the tipping point in the loss. Briton Schiewe drove in all three of CU's runs on a double in the sixth inning, while also going 2-2 with two walks.

On the season, the Black and Gold are hitting .254 with 65 runs scored and 25 extra base hits, five of which are home runs. Trey Bigford leads the team with a .375 batting average and 18 hits. Preseason All-American, Micah Kaaukai leads CU with 11 runs scored on the year, while Colton Adams has a team best 10 RBI.

Cameron's team ERA sits at 4.67, while they have totaled 99 strikeouts in 113.2 innings of work. Andrew Garza leads CU with a 2.22 ERA in 28.1 innings of work with 27 strikeouts. Skyler Henderson owns a 2.40 ERA in 15 innings of relief work with 13 Ks, while Sean Maher has 20 punchouts in 11 innings of work out of the bullpen.

Tarleton State is 9-8 overall this year and are also on a four game slide after getting swept by West Texas A&M last weekend. The first two games of the series with close games that were decided by one and three runs, but the latter two were 14-3 and 14-4 blowouts.

The Texans are hitting .278 with 121 runs scored and 54 extra base hits. Francisco Rodriguez leads them with a .439 batting average and 29 hits and has 18 RBI. Additionally, Blake Adams is batting .317 with a team best 24 runs scored and 20 RBI with five homers.

On the mound, TSU has a team ERA of 5.70 with 147 strikeouts in 132.2 innings of work. Evan Pontley and Nathan Hickey are the team's aces. Pontley has an ERA of 2.54 with 29 strikeouts in 28.1 innings, while Hickey has a 3.14 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 28.2 innings of work.

Following the series against Tarleton State, Cameron will host Texas A&M-Kingsville for a four game series, March 16-18, for their final four non-conference series before league play begins.
