Cameron looks for a pair of wins at UAFS and OC

LAWTON, Okla. – After getting swept by rival Midwestern State in a pair of games last week, the Aggie women look to get back on track on the road against UAFS and Oklahoma Christian for two more division contests.

Starting 5: 
1. Cameron sophomore Maighan Hedge has catapulted herself into the top spot on the conference scoring leaderboard as she is now averaging 20.3 points this season; she averaged 60 points and was 23-24 from the charity stripe in the two games against Midwestern State last week. 
2. Ava Battese scored 14 points and made four triples in last Saturday's loss to the Mustangs; she is now 10th on the Cameron all-time scoring list with 1,061 career points passing 2013 graduate Alexis Williams. 
3. UAFS is in their second season under head coach Tari Cummings and enter the week with the fourth lowest scoring offense in the conference, averaging 59.2 points per game this season. 
4. Oklahoma Christian is coached by long-time Eagle head woman Stephanie Findley, who is in her 35th season with the program; she is 628-446 all-time at OC. 
5. Both the Lady Lions and Eagles have a strong post presence with Tamera Gulley (8.1 rpg and 7.6 ppg) and Mar'Shalia Lollie (7.4 rpg and 9.9 ppg) leading UAFS while Katie Mayo averages an OC-best 7.5 rebounds to go along with 9.9 points per game, which is second on the squad; all three forwards are ranked in the top-10 of the LSC in rebounding. 

Last time out: 
The Aggies lost a hard fought battle at home against Midwestern State last Saturday. After trailing by 10 late in the second period, Cameron used a 11-3 run capped by a buzzer-beating three by Karley Miller to cut the deficit to two points at the break. They then outscored MSU 30-26 in the third quarter, fueled by 19 points from Maighan Hedge. However, the Mustangs made some clutch plays down the stretch to secure the 82-77 win. Hedge finished with a career-high 32 points on 9-20 shooting from the field and 12-13 from the charity stripes. Ava Battese added 14 points with four triples and Miller finished one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds. 

About the Aggies: 
Cameron's 0-2 week against their rival Midwestern State has dropped their record to 5-11 overall and 4-6 against Lone Star Conference opponents. They are also just 1-3 against their division and face two more division foes in UAFS and OC this week. The Black and Gold are averaging right around 70 points per game but are still giving up over 81 to their opposition each outing. They are shooting 37.5 percent from the field while making a league best 9.2 three-point field goals per game at a 34 percent clip. CU also makes 13.4 foul shots per outing and coverts them at a 73 percent clip, which is third in the conference. The Aggies are out-rebounded by 2.4 boards per game and average 18.6 turnovers compared to 13.2 assists when they have the ball in their hands. On the other end of the court the CU netters record 7.4 steals and 2.9 blocks per outing, and teams are shooting 43.4 percent against their defense. 

Hedge's 20.3 points per game leads the Aggies and the conference, while the sophomore also brings in 3.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals per outing. Ava Battese is second on the team in scoring as the senior guard has averaged 17.6 points in her 11 games played this season. Battese is also shooting 41 percent from three and averages 1.3 steals per game. 

Scouting the Lady Lions: 
UAFS enters their first conference battle against the Aggies with an 8-9 overall record and a 5-6 league mark. They are averaging 59.2 points per game while giving up 66.5 to their opposition each game. The Lady Lions are shooting 38.5 percent from the floor, but struggle from three, hitting just 4.0 triples per game at a 26.4 percent clip. They also make 13.5 foul shots per contest and shoot 69.8 percent from the charity stripe. Additionally, UAFS owns a 2.1 rebounding margin and turn the ball over 22.9 times per contest compared to an average of just 10.8 assists. Defensively, the Lady Lions record 8.6 steals and 3.6 blocks per game while allowing opponents to shoot 40.6 percent against them. 

Lollie leads the squad with her 9.9 points per game while shooting over 57 percent from the floor. Junior guard Elston Paige averages 8.3 points per game and a team-high 3.2 assists and 1.7 steals per contest. Additionally, Hannah Boyett and Ashanti Eden both average 7.9 points while Gulley adds 7.6 points per game to her 8.1 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per outing. 

Scouting the Eagles: 
In their first season in the Lone Star Conference Oklahoma Christian is 5-10 overall and 5-6 in league play heading into the fourth week of the new year. They snapped a five-game losing skid with a pair of wins over Texas Woman's and UT Tyler on Jan. 11 and Jan. 16 before falling to No. 4/6 A&M-Commerce last Saturday. The Eagles average 61.0 points per game and are being outscored by their opponents by an average of 9.8. They are shooting 37 percent from the floor, 28 percent from the perimeter, and 74.9 percent from the charity stripe. OC is being out-rebounded by an average of 6.9 boards per contest and turn the ball over 18.2 times per game compared to an average of 14.8 assists. They also average 9.0 steals and 4.9 blocks on the defensive end while allowing opponents to shoot just 38.3 percent from the floor against them. 

The Eagles are led by junior guard Maddison Collyer, who played under CU assistant coach Jeff Mahoney at Harrah HS. Collyer is averaging 11.4 points, 5.1 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game and is shooting 81 percent from the charity stripe. Mayo is second on the team with her 9.9 points per game while leading the squad with a 7.5 rebounding average and 27 blocks. Additionally, Tyra Peck, Megan Shelton, and Kendall Blackburn all score over 8.0 points per outing for the Eagles.

Cameron will follow up their road games against UAFS and OC with a pair of games in front of the Aggie faithful. First up is new LSC-member Texas A&M-International on Jan. 30, then CU will host the Javelinas from Texas A&M-Kingsvile on Feb. 1.
