Harvey Pate served as CU’s head men’s basketball coach and athletic director from 1947-1956. Over that time he compiled a 165-56 record. Mr. Pate became known for his ability to recruit great basketball players like Elvin Hayes, who ended up helping raise the University of Houston to national prominence. Although Coach Pate has many great accomplishments, he was known most for his willingness to help his players succeed off the court as well as on it through his patience, diligence and friendly guidance.
