Cameron Athletics Hall of Fame
Thompson, a native of Temple, OK, served Cameron three different times in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s as a teacher, administrator, and most notably a football and boxing coach. His 1940 football team was undefeated and ranked No. 1 nationally, while his 1946 team lost only one game and ended the 34-game winning streak of Coffeyville, Kansas in the Papoose Bowl in Oklahoma City. Thompson used most of his football players to build Cameron’s boxing team into a national power. He coached football at the high school, college, and professional levels, coaching for the Calgary Stampede of the Canadian Football League where he was dubbed “assistant coach in charge of brutality.” Thompson also served as a scout and director of player personnel for the Houston Oilers and New York Jets of the National Football League. Coach passed away on July 14, 1974
